Pakistan jails army officers linked to militant outfit

ISLAMABAD (PAN army officers of having links to an outlawed militant outfit and handed them different jail terms.

Field General Court Marshal (FGCM) proceedings were completed against Brigadier Ali Khan, Major Inayat Aziz, Major Iftikhar, Major Sohail Akbar and Major Jawad Baseer.

Five years rigorous imprisonment was awarded to Brigadier Ali Khan and three years to Major Sohail Akbar, a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

Maj. Jawad Baseer was sentenced to two years imprisonment and Maj. Inayat Aziz and Maj. Iftikhar to 18 months. The convicts have the right to appeal their sentences before the army court of appeals.

The ISPR did not name the organisation, but officials have said in the past that the quartet had links to Hizbut Tahrir, which has been banned by the Pakistan government.
