KABUL): Although the government has not yet made any announcement, religious scholars on Tuesday said the minimum ‘Sadqa-i-Fitr’ for the current year was equal to the market price of 1.5 kilogram of wheat.

A shopkeeper in the Mandai area of Kabul, Haji Sultan Mohammad, told Pajhwok Afghan News seven kilograms of wheat accounted for 150 afghanis.

According to this price, the rate of 1.5 kg of wheat should work out at more than 35 afghanis. Scholars say the faithful should pay 40 afghanis as a precaution.

Supreme Court’s fatwa Sadiqullah Muslim said that the faithful could offer the poor barley, dates and raisin in Sadqa-i-Fitr.

He added since wheat was widely produced in the country, Afghans should give one kilogram and 800 grams of it per head to the needy before Eidul Fitr prayers.

The scholar urged the well-off people to show generosity and give less than four kilograms of dates. It was mandatory for every adult Muslim with 85 grams of gold or the money equal to its value to give zakat.

Maulvi Muslim said that poor relatives come first and have a greater right to zakat and Sadqa-i-Fitr. Reminded that most people give Sadqa-i-Fitr to their prayer leaders, he explained if an imam is poor, he should be paid.

Religious scholar Qazi Mohammad Hassan Haqyar said it would be better if Sadqa-i-Fitr was paid before Eid prayers. However, he added it could be paid until sundown.

He said paying Sadqa-i-Fitr to the poor before Eid prayers had extra rewards because the destitute could use the money to buy the things they need.
