5 killed in new Waziristan drone strike

Aug 18, 2012 - 15:38

ISLAMABAD (PANinfo-icon): As locals celebrated Eidul Fitr, a US drone killed five people in Pakistaninfo-icon’s troubled North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghanistaninfo-icon border, an official said on Saturday.

The CIA-operated drone fired two missiles on a compound in the Shuwedar village in Shawal district, considered a stronghold of Talibaninfo-icon and Al Qaeda linked militants.

The latest attack took place 180 kilometres west of Miranshah, the main town in the region, government official Mohammad Akbar told Pajhwok Afghan News. The identities of the dead remained unclear, he said.

Despite protests from the Pakistan government, calling drone strikes a violation of the country’s sovereignty, 200 suspected fighters have so far been killed in 25 air raids in the region this year.
