KABUL): President Hamid Karzai, who called his national security team for an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, was briefed on measures being taken to contain and prevent militants’ infiltration into Afghan forces’ ranks, his office said.

The meeting discussed attempts by foreign spy agencies to undermine the Afghan security institutions, with President Karzai directing the authorities concerned to redouble efforts at adding institutional strength to National Army, Police and intelligence department to better respond to the conspiracies, a statement issued from the Karzai spokesman’s office said.

The statement accused foreign spy agencies of hatching plots throughout the past three decades to disrupt the goal of achieving a strong Afghanistan and building a capable Afghan force. President Karzai was briefed on measures being taken to prevent the increasing insider attacks by the defence and interior ministries.

The meeting termed as useless recent destructive enemy designs perpetrated by individuals in Afghan army and police uniforms to hurt a process aimed at training a professional and capable Afghan force, the statement said.

Presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi told reporters in Kabul that intelligence services, including those in neighboring countries, were playing a part in most insider attacks. He didn’t name them.

In the past, intelligence agencies in Iran and the Pakistan commander Gen. John Allen to discuss the issue, he said.

There have been 32 insider attacks against coalition forces so far this year, resulting in 40 deaths, according to NATO.
