KABUL): Some Afghan army generals, who called on President Karzai on Wednesday, said Afghan security forces were ready to keep security for the whole of the country after planned withdrawal of foreign troops in 2014, the Karzai office said.

Despite the lack of resources and weapons, Afghan forces would be able to defend the country with strong national spirit after 2014, the visiting generals assured Karzai, according to a statement issued from the Presidential Palace.

Without naming them, the statement quoted the generals as saying the morale of Afghan forces was high and was strengthening with each passing day. They said the withdrawal of foreign troops would leave no impact on the morale of Afghan forces.

They also said some media outlets and analysts were making remarks which were not in the country’s interest. Without elaborating, the generals called for preventing analysts from making irresponsible statements about the security situation in the country.

On Monday, military experts criticised the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for revealing what they said an incomprehensible number of deaths among Afghan army troops who died in insurgency-related incidents over the past two months.

One of the experts said the military situation was deteriorating in the country, with militia forces and uprisings contributing to it.

At the meeting at the Presidential Palace, Karzai called his meeting with the generals as positive, urging continuation of such meetings to discuss activities of security forces.

The meeting comes amid reports that the president is poised to announce a major cabinet and national-security shake-up. Long-serving professional police officer, Ghulam Mujtaba Patang, is to head the Interior Ministry, with Karzai possibly placing Asadullah Khalid in charge of the spy agency to replace Rahmatullah Nabil who on Wednesday confirmed he has been sacked.

Karzai intends to nominate Bismillah Khan Mohammedi, the ousted interior minister, to take over the Defense Ministry, according to reports.
