KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Friday voiced deep shock and anguish over the death of 53 people in a road tragedy in southern Ghazni province, his office said.

The head-on collision occurred in the Spin Band area of Aab Band district on the Kabul-Kandahar highway at 9am, killing 51 passengers on a bus that crashed into a fuel tanker, whose driver and cleaner were also killed.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Karzai prayed for the dead after Friday prayers. He directed the authorities concerned to assist the bereaved families and ensure the best possible treatment of the five people injured in the accident.

He extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished the wounded individuals a swift recovery, the statement added.
