Kabul: Cabinet ministers, parliamentarians and members of the High Peace Council commemorated the first assassination anniversary of former President and peace council head Burhanuddin Rabbani on Wednesday by laying wreaths at his hill-top grave in Kabul. Rabbani’s son and successor as Chairman of the peace council, Salahuddin Rabbani, led the wreath laying ceremony and addressed the gathering, which included Defense Minister Bismillah Mohammadi , Education Minister Ghulam Farooq Wardak, and representatives of political parties. President Hamid Karzai did not attend the event but he recently issued a decree christening the week during which Rabbani was assassinated “The Week of Peace and National Unity. “ The former president’s supporters have organized events throughout the week. abbani was assassinated at his Wazir Akbar Khan residence along with three members of the peace panel by a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban emissary. He was president of Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996.
