KABUL): Two youth hanged themselves to death from trees over the past two days in the Qarabagh district of central Kabul province, with residents claiming to have rescued a third from committing suicide, an official and an elder said on Monday.

The latest incident involves Ali Mohammad, 22, who hanged himself to death from a fig tree last night, Malik Shah Aqa, a tribal elder from Kariz village, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Linking the suicides to domestic problems and disputes, the elder said another boy, Mihrabudin, 17, hanged himself from a mulberry tree a day before Mohammad did so.

However, he said, a third boy, Mohammad Saeed, 16, was rescued by residents on Sunday when he tried to commit suicide the same way. Saeed was later hospitalized and his condition is said to be stable.

Aqa quoted Ali Mohammad’s father as saying that his son killed himself after he slapped him in the face for refusing to undergo a haircut. However, Aqa has no details about the circumstances surrounding the suicides by the two other youth.

Qarabagh district chief Mohammad Hanif Siddiqui confirmed the incidents, which he blamed on domestic violence, especially maltreatment at the hands of parents.
