KABUL): Hundreds of people on Monday rallied in the central capital against sentencing a girl to 100 lashes by what they called “a Kanagroo court” in southern Ghazni province on the charge of having sexual ties with a boy.
Participants of the rally asked the government to bring to justice the cleric who sentenced the 15-year old to 100 lashes a week ago in the Jaghori district of Ghazni. The boy was fined 80,000 afghanis by the cleric.
To condemn the incident, more than 300 students, including females, of Kabul and other universities joined civil society and human right activists in their protest.
The protestors were carrying banners that read: “We want justice, law enforcement,’ “silence is crime” and “members of the Kangaroo court should be punished.”
Sister of the victim girl, Shafiqa, who arrived in Kabul to participate in the rally, asked the government, the parliament and human rights organizations to massive punish the cleric who punished her sister with 100 lashes.
She insisted her sister had been deceived and sexually abused by Wahab, a tailor. Her sister was given lashes after their uncle informed the local prayer leader about her relation with Wahab, Shafiqa said.
“My sister is now in a bad health condition. We fear she will commit suicide if we left her alone at home,” she said.
