KABUL.

Rahimi was declared the winner WBO Intercontinental winner in the 70

-kilogram category after Mbelwa abandoned fight in the seventh round of the nationally broadcast match.  

Dubbed “Fight 4 Peace,” the match started around 10 pm as a crowd of over 1,000 packing the Loya Jirga tent, the official venue for national political deliberations, cheered on the Afghan hero.   Hundreds of expats and officials, including Kabul Police Chief Ayub Salang and national intelligence chief, Asadullah Khalid, were in attendance.

Rahimi thanked the Afghan government for providing the facilities for the match and the Afghan people who encouraged him during the contest.

He said that although his Tanzanian rival was very strong and threw a few punches, in the end he defeated him.

Rehimi,  29, was born in Afghanistan but grew up in Germany. . He started boxing when he was 14 and prior to Tuesday night’s fight, participated in 21 matches, 20 of which he won.

He won the World Boxing Union (WBU) Championship in February by defeating his Belarusian rival Hamburg, Germany.
