KABUL.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, former foreign minister and Amrullah Saleh, ex-chief of National Directorate of Security and former interior minister Hanif Atmar, were invited to attend a conference in Ottawa on 26th October, 2012.

Embassy officials in Kabul had advised Abdullah and Saleh to obtain their visas from the Canadian embassy in Pakistan, but the leaders refused to do so,” said an official, who did not want to be named.

“Embassy in Kabul said they cannot do anything and the only way was for them to apply in Islamabad,” the official had told the conference organisers.

“Going to Islamabad is like committing suicide,” said Saleh.

The one-day conference would have given the senior leaders an opportunity to speak on Afghan’s future, especially after NATO’s pullout in 2014.

“About two months ago Abdullah and Atmar were also invited to speak at a conference but Abdullah could not go due to work commitments,” said the spokesman for Change and Hope coalition, Fazal Rahman Orya.

Canadian embassy in Kabul had also refused visa to former first vice president Ahmad Zai Masoud some years ago.
