President approves 16 executions

KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Monday signed execution warrants for 16 inmates convicted of heinous crimes, including murder and rape, his spokesman Aimal Faizi said on Monday.

A list of the death row inmaes, convicted by primary, appellate and supreme courts, was presented to the president at a meeting, Faizi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

After going through court verdicts, the spokesman said, the president approved the executions, which might take place in two phases.
