KABUL): President Hamid Karzai’s office on Friday rejected rumors that the president “illegally interfered” in the Kabul Bank scandal.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, president’s spokesperson Aimal Faizai said that there was no evidence to show that Karzai was involved in the bank’s scandal.
Karzai is the only individual who recommended the government and international organisations to investigate and resolve the bank’s financial mess.
In a response to a question, he said: “I am only speaking on behalf of the president, I can clearly say the president is not involved in this case.”
The commercial bank was mired in a major financial crisis after nearly $900 million were siphoned out of the bank by several top officials, promoting the government to launch a full-scale probe.
Earlier this week an Independent Joint Anti-Corruption and Evaluation Committee disclosed that billions of dollars were illegally transferred abroad that ruined the bank.
According to the findings, the bank’s top officials were alleged involved in the financial scam.
