Civil society, government must work closely: analysts

KABUL organisations should implement their activities by coordinating with the government to help the citizens, said analysts.

The suggestion was floated at the weekly radio/television programme “Your Voice”, a joint initiative of the Killid media group and its partners — Pajhwok Afghan News and Saba Media Organistaion — within the newly-created Afghanistan Independent Media Consortium, launched last March.

These organisations should work with the government to help enforce law, resolve public’s grouses and   protecting people’s rights, a member of Jabha-i-Nijaat, Mohammad Ishaq Atmar, said at the roundtable discussion.

A public representative from the Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament, Farishta Amini, said civil society could play a crucial role for the improvement of the society and these groups  should cooperate with the government.

There is no legislative in the parliament to monitor civil society organisations, she added.

However, a civil society representative Murtaza Sarim said many of these organisations were registered with the Ministry of Commerce and Industries and report to the ministry on their expenses and regarding their projects.

The organisations are responsible to their donors, he said, adding that there may be some groups that violate the law by not presenting their reports to the ministry.

The civil society plays an important role for the development of the country and they should improve their coordination with Afghan government, he added.

Another rights activist, Ajmal Hodman, said organisations have been registered with the ministries of commerce, justice, information and culture, so they are responsible to the respective government departments and donor countries.
