KABUL‘s political office in Qatar to show the Afghan government credible documents from the movement regarding their nominations.

Apart from the Taliban’s political bureau, the vital importance of peace in Afghanistan was also discussed at the meeting, chaired by President Hamid Karzai at his office in Kabul, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

Necessary measures should be taken for the success of the peace process and all aspects of the drive should be carefully dealt with, the participants agreed.

Given bitter past experiences, such as the assassination of former president Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani and a recent suicide attack on National Directorate of Security (NDS) head Asadullah Khalid by Taliban’s peace messengers, the meeting decided members of the Taliban office in Qatar had to produce their credentials from the movement.

The meeting also discussed the national security environment, with Defence Minister Gen. Bismillah Khan Mohammadi and Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi presenting a report on reforms in promotion policy for senior military officers, appointments to security agencies and retirement.

Gen. Karimi suggested amendments to a law regarding army officers’ promotions, recruitment and retirement.  In response, Karzai said educational qualifications, competence and patriotism should be key considerations in military officers’ elevation.
