KABUL): More than 150,000 heavy and light weapons have so far been delivered to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) programme since its inception in 2005, officials said on Monday.
On Monday, more than one thousand Kalashnikovs and pistols were handed over to DIAG by the Ministry of Interior, a defence ministry official, Gen. Abdul Wahab Joyenda, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The weapons had been seized from illegal armed groups jointly by interior and defence ministries in cooperation with the spy servince, the National Directorate of Security (NDS), he added.
Brig. Gen. Abdul Jamil Kohistani, a senior director at interior ministry said: “The existence of weapons and illegal groups has been a major threat to the country and its people.”
