GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Sixteen prisoners were reunited with their families on Wednesday in the southern province of Ghazni after being released from the Bagram detention centre.

Speaking at a ceremony welcoming the inmates in Ghazni city, Governor Musa Khan Akbarzada  urged the freed men to take proactive part in their country’s reconstruction and encourage others to shun insurgency.

He asked the central government and foreign troops to release prisoners held on dubious charges.

An Afghan National Army (ANA) officer Lt. Col. Shahabuddin said so far 600 inmates had been released from the Bagram jail since its control was handed over to Afghan forces last year. Another 600 more prisoners are to be freed until the end of this year, he said.

Among the released individuals was Abdul Rahman, a Qarabagh resident,  who said they were tortured and subjected to electric shocks by foreigners in detention . “ Now I feel unwell,” he complained.
