KABUL): A prisoner in the heavily-guarded Pul-i-Charkhi jail on the eastern outskirts of the capital Kabul has hanged himself to death, an official said on Sunday.
Late Saturday night, Abbas, 25, went to the toilet and strangulated himself there, Director-General of Prisons Lt. Gen. Amir Mohammad Jamshedi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Abbas, hailing from central Bamyan province, was sentenced to three years in jail following his conviction on robbery charges. He had spent a year in jail, Jamshedi said.
According another prisoner, Abdullah Fateh, 86 inmates had gone on hunger strike, sewing their lips. He said they would continue their protest until their demands were met.
“We want the prisoners who have already completed their jail terms to be released and part of a presidential decree reducing jail sentences of inmates should be implemented immediately,” Fateh demanded.
He called on parliamentarians to assess their situation by visiting the Russian-built jail. But Jamshedi denied any hunger strike.
