ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the arrest of Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on the charge of receiving kickbacks from rental power projects in the energy-deficient country.

A three-member bench of the apex court also ordered the immediate arrest of 16 other officials, directing the authorities to produce them before the Supreme Court on Wednesday (tomorrow).

In the case, nine rental power firms allegedly received more than Rs22 billion as a mobilisation advance from the Pakistan government to commission their projects. But most of them failed to set up their plants and a few installed them after inordinate delays.

Ashraf allegedly received payments in return for his role as energy minister in overseeing the introduction of rental power projects.

The court, which disqualified former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani last year, ruled in a separate case that general election — due later this year — would take place on schedule, asking the Election Commission to be ready for it.
