KABUL Abdul Ghani Baradar — the group’s former second-in-command.

Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani told reporters in Dubai on Friday: “The remaining (Afghan) detainees, we are coordinating, and they will be released subsequently.”

After talks with acting US special representative David Pearce and Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Jawed Luddin, the diplomat said Mullah Baradar would also be freed.  Over 100 Afghan prisoners, including Baradar, are said to be in Pakistan’s custody.

Speaking exclusively to Pajhwok Afghan News, President Hamid Karzai’s spokesman Aimal Faizi hailed Jilani’s announcement an important step toward peace and stability in Afghanistan.

The peace council’s deputy head, Abdul Hakim Mujahid, said the panel had urged the Pakistan government to free all Afghan prisoners. He claimed many of them were being held without charge.

Islamabad’s promise would help accelerate the reconciliation process, he hoped, asking Afghan diplomats to forge greater coordination with Pakistan in acquiring information about those freed.
