MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Winter assistance, including food items, was delivered to nearly 2,000 families in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital city of northern Balkh province, officials said on Sunday.

Each family received four bags of coal, a heater, two blankets, warm clothes, shoes, coats and food items from Save the Children, a private organisation, the director of refugees said.

Abdul Saboor Qadiri told Pajhwok Afghan News the families had been displaced from Char Bulak, Chamtal, Char Kand and Sholgar districts of Balkh province.

The displaced also include households from Upper and Lower Dara-i-Sawf districts of Samangan, as well as Sar-i-Pul province, he added.

But one of the aid recipients, Aqila, said they needed more assistance during the harsh winter season. Her 10 years old son sells socks to earn a livelihood for the family, she said, asking the government to provide him work.

Another displaced person from Sar-i-Pul, Syed Ahmad, also demanded a job. Over the past few years, up to 8,000 families have been displaced from neighbouring provinces and districts of Balkh due to insecurity and drought.
