1st woman district chief assumes office

 SHIBERGHAN (PAN on Tuesday assumed her office in the Khwaja Dokoh district of northern Jawzjan province.

Sahira Shakib Sadat, speaking at her inauguration, listed the protection of women of the district as her top priorities.

Also an activist of the Junbish-i- Mili party, led by Abdur Rashid Dostum, she said violence against women was still rampant in the district. During Taliban’s era, she recalled, women’s hands were cut off.

Eleven years on, females continued to be tortured in a variety of ways, the district complained, pledging to do all she could to protect women’s rights.

Sadat, who lost her husband 11 year ago in a fight against the Taliban, has served as chairperson of the party women’s wing for three years.

The only woman among 10 candidates for the job, she was selected on open merit. She received education at the Khadija High School in Jawzjan before briefly serving as a teacher at the Ghulam Sarwar Shaheed High School.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Governor Eng. Abdur Rahman Mahmoodi said, women and men had equal rights.

Habiba Surabi of Bamyan is the only woman governor, with Roshna Khalid acting as spokesperson for the Parwan governor. Similarly, Ozra Jafari is also the only female mayor of Daikundi and Maria Bashir the prosecutor of Herat.
