WASHINGTON (PAN commander on Wednesday said Afghan forces, poised lead all operations by spring, were ready to take over security responsibility for their country and as such they would take lead by the spring of this year.

“We are in the process of moving Afghan forces into the lead for security. This spring, we’ll reach a milestone and they will plan, lead and execute all operations across Afghanistan,” said Lt. Gen. James L Terry.

He told Pentagon reporters Afghan police and army could and do fight for the their country and people. He stressed the need for supporting and sustaining the local forces.

Terry said the insurgents feared the growing capability of Afghan forces. “We are fully engaged in supporting the government of Afghanistan to develop its security forces that are capable of containing the insurgency and managing the violence.”

He pointed out the challenge was to continue building their capability and capacity. And through security assistance, the US-led international forces were doing that, he added.

He believed ongoing security transition had undermined the insurgent narrative of fighting foreign forces and would uncover their plans to control the people of Afghanistan. “Everywhere the ANSF are leaning into challenges.”

Calling insider attacks an enemy tactic, he said: “We actively work with our Afghan partners. I’m sure you’re very aware of the vetting and the counterintelligence efforts that are ongoing there, to beat back that threat.”
