MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN (FEFA) on Tuesday warned the new draft electoral law would facilitate fraud in the polls.

The draft law referred to the Wolesi Jirga for approval had flaws that increased the possibility of government interference in the elections, FEFA Programme Director of Mohammad Naeem Asghari said.

On the sidelines of a consultative meeting in Mazar-i-Sharif, Asghari told Pajhwok Afghan News the creation of a poll tribunal at the Supreme Court amounted to plain interference in the electoral process.

The meeting was attended by representatives of mainstream political parties, civil society organisations, provincial council members and youth.

Asghari believed the 12th grade education condition for candidates was an improper decision. The official suggested the government should set the bar higher in terms of runners’ qualifications.

The masses were concern about the election’s transparency, alleged the Balkh PC head, Mohammad Afzal Hadid. He asked the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to act honestly and defy government pressures.
