KABUL): Eight people, including two policemen, were sentenced up to 18 years in jail on drug smuggling charges by the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) appeal court, an official said on Monday.
The men, hailing from Nimroz, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Takhar and Herat provinces, were handed down jail sentences ranging from 7.5 years to 18 years, CJTF spokesman Khalid Ahmad Mowahid told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Police had recovered more than 51 kilograms of heroin, 30kg of opium and 86kg of hashish from the individuals after their arrests, he said.
Mowahid said the convicts had defence attorneys to plead their cases. They were convicted under counter-narcotics law based on evidence brought before the court, he said.
