ASADABAD (PANinfo-icon): An 18-member group of militants on Tuesday joined the government-led peace process in eastern Kunar province, a senior official said.

The group that was active in Asmar district renounced the insurgency as a result of efforts by intelligence operatives, Governor Fazlullah Wahidi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the High Peace Councilinfo-icon was providing basic facilities for the people quitting violence.

Islamuddin, the group leader, said: “I have been in touch with the militants for nine years. “Now I have realised there is no point in fighting.” He promised efforts at convincing his associates into joining the reconciliation drive.
