6 suspected bombers killed in Bannu encounter

ISLAMABAD (PAN on Thursday, officials said.

At least two policemen were injured in the firefight that was triggered by an insurgent attack on a police station in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

One intelligence official confided to Pajhwok Afghan News a group of heavily armed fighters stormed the police facility in Maryan area during the predawn assault.

Nisar Tanoli, the district police chief, said the attack had been successfully encountered and six militants killed. Five suicide bombers were killed by during the encounter while the sixth blew himself up inside the police station.

The banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, but the group’s spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan would not comment on the number of the assailants. He said the attack was in retaliation for the killing of fighters in custody in Miranshah.
