KABUL (upper house of parliament) members on Monday strongly condemned the execution of Afghans in Iran and asked the Afghan government and international human rights institutions to prevent such incidents.

Five people of the Glifgan district of northern Takhar province were recently executed in the neighbouring country and their bodies were transported to their native villages three days ago.

A statement from the Senate Secretariat said Iran had promised all Afghan death-row prisoners in that country would have their penalties commuted to life imprisonment. However, it lamented Iran’s failure keep its promise.

“Unjust execution of Afghans by Iran has once fuelled concerns among the people,” the house said, calling Afghans the victims of overt and covert plots of their neighbours. Hundreds of thousands of people had been killed over the past three decades, it added.

The upper house asked the Karzai administration as well as international human rights watchdogs to highlight the execution of Afghans in Iran and take urgent steps for putting an end to the process.

President Hamid Karzai recently tasked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate the killing of Afghans in Iranian prisons.
