Gen. Rajab hurt by avalanche, 2 missing

CHARIKAR (PAN): Salang Highway maintenance chief Gen. Abdul Rajab was slightly injured when he was buried along with seven subordinates under a snow avalanche that hit the highway, an official said on Wednesday.

The overnight avalanche struck an excavator, injuring Gen. Rajab and others in the Gurgurai area on the route between Kabul and several northern provinces. The driver and cleaner have since been missing.

Maintenance officials had gone to the site in central Parwan province to oversee snow-clearing operations, said Rajab’s deputy, Abdul Zahir.

The officials were rescued by colleagues. The excavator, its driver and his assistant have been missing, he said, adding efforts were underway to find them.
