KABUL Investment Support Agency (AISA) on Thursday sought $202 million (10 billion afghanis) in financial support from the international community to construct industrial parks in Afghanistan.

AISA chief Wafiullah Iftikhar made the call at a meeting with representatives of donor agencies and foreign embassies in Kabul.

After the meeting, Iftikhar told reporters the proposed assistance would be used to create new industrial parks in Kabul, Nangarhar, Balkh, Herat and Kunduz provinces and reconstruct the existing ones.

“So far we have received no pledges of assistance, but I hope the international community would come up with aid for the sake of Afghanistan’s economic development,” he said.

The proposed industrial parks over 1,499 hectares of land would attract $ 2.8 billion in investment and provide work opportunities for 200,000 people, Iftikhar hoped.

He identified the lack of electricity and industrial parks as key factors challenging foreign investment in Afghanistan. More industrial parks would bring more investment and strengthen the private sector, he said.

To a question about the post-2014 environment, he said despite security problems, foreign investors came to Afghanistan and they would continue to do so even after foreign troops left the country.
