Reporter gunned down in Balochistan

KABUL’s troubled southwestern province of Balochistan on Friday evening.

Mehmood Jan Afridi was shot dead by unidentified assailants on a motorbike near a bus stop in Kalat town, according to DawnNews.

Kalat Deputy Commissioner Bashir Ahmed Bazai told reporters: “It appears to be an act of targeted killing.” The attackers managed to escape.

He came under fire inside a public call centre that he owned, The Express Tribune reported, saying the journalist died on the spot and his body was taken to the main district hospital for autopsy.

On Feb. 27, Geo News and Khyber TV reporter Malik Mumtaz was gunned down was on his way home in Miranshah — the main in North Waziristan — from Chashma.

Last year, several media representatives were subjected to targeted assaults in Balochistan. Over the past two months, five journalists have been killed in Pakistan, which has become a dangerous place for media workers.
