KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): A three-day polio vaccination campaign, targeting 600,000 children in two restive southern provinces, was launched on Sunday.
The drive began in Ghorak district that was recently recaptured by the government. No anti-polio campaign could be conducted in the district over the past six years.
Public Health Director Dr. Abdul Qayyum Pukhla said the drive would focus on 15 districts of Kandahar and Helmand. Children in vulnerable areas that were left out previously would be administered polio drops, he added.
Governor Toryalai Weesa, meanwhile, urged the militants to avoid creating hurdles to the drive and help volunteers reach out to all areas. Of the 30 polio cases detected in the country since March 21, 24 were in the southern provinces.
