KABUL): Small power and irrigation dams would be constructed in three provinces at a cost of $24.8million, to be provided by the government of Japan, officials said on Sunday.

An agreement to the effect was signed between Minister of Energy and Water Mohammad Ismail and Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) representative Ousmane Guindo in Kabul.

“The Japanese government will provide the grant for the project, while contracting firms will be chosen by the ministry. FAO will supervise the process,” Ismail Khan said after the signing ceremony.

With the construction of small dams in central Kabul, Kapisa and Bamyan provinces, the capacity of the ministry officials at the provincial level would also improve, he hoped.

Similar projects had already been executed in Kabul and Bamyan, Kapisa would be given priority this time around, Khan said, without giving details.

With the completion of these projects, 21,000 hectares of land would come under irrigation, said Ousmane Guindo. He added the schemes would boost agricultural production and create 70,000 jobs.
