SHIBERGHAN (PAN commander, who recently reconciled with the government, was shot to death along with two of his associates by his bodyguard in Mingajik district of northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Sunday.

The midnight incident took place at the former commander’s residence in Chahar Changhoi area, Police Chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz Ghairat told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He identified the ex-Taliban leader as Haji Aslam, who had joined the government-sanctioned peace process about six months ago. He was killed by Khairullah, one of his guards, with the aid of six other persons he had invited at Aslam’s home, the police chief said.

One of the attackers was killed, but Khairullah and the rest escaped, Ghairat said, adding the incident was being investigated.

Aslam, who had prior threats to his life from his former comrades after he switched sides, led a group of armed men to keep security for the area, the official said.

A Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Haji Aslam was a local police commander, who was killed along with three of his guards in the incident.

But the police chief said local police had not been deployed to the area, where Aslam was killed.

Before joining the peace process, Aslam led a 150-member rebel group that had been active in Khamyab, Mingajik, Khaniqa and Aqcha districts. He announced full support to the government after his surrender, Ghairat said.

Resident Saifullah said Aslam spent his last years resolving people’s problems and played the role of a bridge between the government and residents.
