KABUL (PAN): Afghan and ISAF military leaders on Sunday constituted a 14-member delegation to investigate claims of US special forces’ involvement in torturing and killing civilians in central Maidan Wardak province.

The decision came at a meeting between the Afghan and NATO military top brass in Maidan Shahr, the governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The participant discussed ways of addressing residents’ concerns.

Headed by Defence Ministry representative Din Mohammad Khan, the investigating team would embark on its task on Monday, Khogyani said. Over the next three days, the delegation will meet the people who were allegedly harassed by the US forces or the Afghans working with them.

The investigators would collect proofs of foreign soldiers’ reported misconduct and share them with President Hamid Karzai, the official said. A final decision would be taken by the president, who has already given the American troops two weeks to leave the province.

Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi, Director General Military Operations Fazl Aman, acting National Directorate of Security (NDS) chief Brig. Gen. Asamuddin, Din Mohammad and Governor Abdul Majid attended the talks.

The foreign troops were represented by International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (IJC) commander Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, Sgt. Maj. Thomas Capel, State Department representative David Gale and others.

Speaking to the participants, tribal elders from various districts on Saturday accused US forces of picking up and killing residents. The elders claimed some families had lost their members to brutal actions by the forces. The elders sought punishment to the perpetrators and recovery of the missing people.
