KABUL of a key dam, an official said.
Led by provincial council chief, Azizullah, the delegation met Governor Abdul Majid Khogyani and called for the Band-i-Sultan Dam in Jaghatu district to be converted into a hydropower plant.
Gubernatorial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News that Azizullah had urged the governor the dam, currently used for irrigating 15,000 hectares of land, had the potential to meet electricity needs of 50,000 families.
The public representative said the dam, having a 1000 years history, had been discussed with officials of public works and energy ministries, but they cited security concerns for their failure to develop the dam.
Governor Khogyani said Maidan Wardak and Ghazni needed major infrastructure development schemes and the Bandi-i-Sultan Dam had equal importance for residents of the two provinces He suggested security situation around the site be improved.
