JALALABAD (PAN): In a violent upsurge in recent days, more than a dozen insurgents were killed during clashes with security forces and a US drone strike in eastern Kunar and Laghman provinces, officials said on Tuesday.
The airstrike in the Ghaziabad district of Kunar killed four insurgents on Monday night, 201st Selab Military Corps spokesman Col. Nouman Hatifi told Pajhwok Afghan News
The dead included a notorious militant commander, Mullah Haji, he said, adding ground forces later confiscated light and heavy weapons at the site.
Elsewhere in the province, three insurgents were killed during a clash with Afghan National Army (ANA) troops in the Watapur district, Hatifi said. Another two rebels were killed during a search operation in the Marwara district.
Local resident Arifullah confirmed two seriously wounded armed men succumbed to their injuries they sustained in the clash on Sunday night.
In neighbouring Laghman, two rebels were eliminated during a security operation codenamed “Shamsher 33” in Qasba and Slaiankar areas on Sunday evening, the governor’s spokesman, Sarhadi Zwak, said.
