KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Japan on Tuesday promised Afghanistaninfo-icon $116.9 million in new assistance for four key projects, the foreign ministry in Kabul said.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Zalmai Rassoul signed the agreements with Japanese Ambassador to Afghanistan Hiroshi Takahashi in Kabul.

The assistance will cover a project for the rehabilitation and expansion of aircraft parking space at Kabul airport and water supply facilities in Deh Sabz district.

According to a statement from the ministry, the funds would also be spent on improving road maintenance capacity of Ministry of Public Works staff and procuring fuel for social development programmes.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, the foreign minister praised Japan as a solid, steadfast and dependable friend and partner in Afghanistan’s efforts to rise from decades of destruction and consolidate peace.

He said 70 percent of the Afghans had gained access to basic healthinfo-icon services, eight million children were enrolled in schools and the capacity of judges and prosecutors had increased.
