 KABUL’s sovereignty.

At a meeting with scholars from eastern Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman and Nuristan provinces, Karzai highlighted ulema’s role in maintaining peace and harmony.

He also stressed the scholar’s role in making negotiations between the government and rebel groups a success, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

The president urged parties to the conflict to prepare a mechanism for lasting peace in the country in accordance with Islamic injunctions.

Advancing the national interests was the duty of every Afghan, especially religious scholars, Karzai said. He appealed the scholars to encourage unity among the people and promotion of education.

During the meeting, the scholars suggested the arrangement of a conference of religious scholars from Islamic countries in Kabul to recommend ways of bringing peace to the country.
