Private institutes lure unsuccessful candidates

KABUL): Private sector universities on Tuesday offered free admissions, fee discount and other privileges to high school graduates who failed to qualify this year’s university entry test.

Royeen Rahmani, speaking on behalf of the private universities’ union, said 17,500 students had failed the entry test and private sector higher education institutes were offering free admissions to 500 of them and fee discount as well as other privileges to the rest.

Last week, Higher Education Minister Obaidullah Obaid told a Cabinet meeting that his ministry had divided 62 private sector higher education institutes into three categories in 10 provinces — high category, medium and lower — keeping in view their teaching methodology.

The minister asked private institutions placed in lower category to bring drastic reforms to their teaching methods over the next two months.

Rahmani welcomed the ministry’s evaluation of private institutions as positive, the sector would come up with positive changes and reforms within the deadline.
