Bridge on Kajaki River on verge of collapse

 LASHKARGAH (PAN): A wooden bridge on Kajaki River is on the verge of collapse in the southern province of Helmand, officials said on Wednesday.

The 140 metres bridge, built in 1967, was going to cave in, the district chief, Abdul Razzaq Mazloomyar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He asked the government and international donors to construct a concrete bridge in the area to resolve the problems of the people permanently.

If the bridge collapsed, transpiration and security problems of the area would worsen, he warned.

An amount of $2.5 million had been approved for the construction of a bridge on the river six years ago, but the project had not been implemented so far due to security concerns, he added.

Only light vehicle can pass through the old bridge, said a resident of the area, Haji Nek Mohammad.
