KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): President Hamid Karzai has renewed his call on the nation to actively participate in the ongoing spring tree plantation drive, saying every Afghan should sow at least one tree.

In a radio address to the nation aired last night, Karzai said establishing orchards, lawns and green areas was an important aspect they had to do for better environmentinfo-icon. "Trees play an important role in the beatification of a country," Karzai said, stressing the need for making tree plantation efforts a success because most of orchards and forests in Afghanistaninfo-icon had been lost to decades of war.

The president also urged no more construction of buildings on cultivable lands and by destroying trees.

The Kabul Municipality on Thursday launched a tree plantation drive, saying 400,000 different kind of saplings would be planted as part of reaching this year's target of growing one million saplings.
