LASHKARGAH/ASADABAD(PAN): A tribal elder was shot to death by unknown gunmen in the Musa Qala district of southern Helmand province on Wednesday. In eastern Kunar province, a primary sentenced a man to death for killing his step-mother.
The elder identified as Haji Abdul Qadir was travelling in a car home from the district centre when unknown assailants opened fire at him, a security official said, but declined to be identified. He said Qadir had no personal enmity and suspected the Taliban behind the murder.
In Kunar, the primary court in Asadabad, the provincial capital, sentenced Fazl Akbar to death and his father Ghulam Akbar and real mother to 16 and two years in jail respectively for killing Akbar’s second wife, Nasrin.
The ruling came at an open trial in which the three accused and family members of the slain woman were present.
During the trial, Fazl Akbar confessed to killing his step-mother, insisting his father and real mother were not involved.
Attorney Fazl Rabi, however, said Nasrin had been killed in involvement of Ghulam Akbar and his living wife.
