FAIZABAD (PAN): Sixteen insurgents, including two commanders, were killed and nine others wounded in two clashes with security forces in northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Monday.

Seven rebels were killed and nine wounded during an encounter on Sunday afternoon when a security patrol came under rebel attack in the Zow area of the Warduj district, the provincial police chief said.

Brig. Gen Imamuddin Motmain told Pajhwok Afghan News notorious militant commanders Mullah Zabihullah and Amarullah were among the dead.

Nine Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers wounded in the firefight were evacuated to hospital, said the district chief, Dawlat Mohammad Khowri.

But a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed 20 security personnel were killed and 10 others wounded during the gunbattle. He acknowledged the loss of only three rebels.

Separately, nine militants were killed and 16 others, including Mullah Sabir, were detained in the wake of a fight in the Jurm district of the province, Motmain said. He acknowledged the death of a policeman and injuries to two others.
