KABUL, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan on Wednesday inked a trilateral framework agreement on the construction of a railroad following talks in Ashgabat, the Presidential Palace in Kabul said.

Hamid Karzai, Emomali Rahmon and Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov discussed the ambitious project at a tripartite meeting in Tajikistan’s capital.

A statement from Karzai’s office said the agreement would define the terms of construction of the railway line between Ashgabat and Dushanbe through Afghanistan.

Under the deal, experts from the three nations will work out technical details and financial cost of the railway line within a month. Work on laying the track will begin in July.

After the signing ceremony, the presidents addressed a joint news conference. They called the rail link crucial to the economic development of their region.

President Karzai said: “This railroad will not only connect the three countries, it will also play an important role in the economic development of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the region at large.”

With the signing of the accord, the three countries had taken another stride toward the wellbeing of their peoples, the president remarked. “It will gift a bright future to the three nations,” he concluded.
