Zardari supports High Peace Council efforts

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Pakistaninfo-icon’s President Asif Ali Zardari has said his country views relations with Afghanistaninfo-icon as an important component of its efforts for peace and stability in the region.

At a meeting with President Hamid Karzai in Ashgabat late on Wednesday, Zardari said Pakistan remained committed to long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan.

His government had freed a number of high-profile Talibaninfo-icon prisoners at the High Peace Councilinfo-icon’s request, he said, explaining the gesture was demonstrative of Pakistan’s sincerity about the reconciliation efforts.

The Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Zardari as reaffirming Islamabad’s strong support for an Afghan-led reconciliation process. A peaceful and stable Afghanistan was in Pakistan’s interest, he acknowledged.

While meeting Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly M. Berdimuhamedov, Zardari stressed the importance of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline. He wanted to see the project built as soon as possible.
