JALALABAD (PAN): Up to 1500 public welfare schemes have been executed at a total cost of $80million (4,274,400,000 afghanis) over the past year in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Saturday.

Addressing a Nawroz ceremony, Governor Gul Agha Sherzai said his administration remained focused on Nangarhar’s development.

He greeted the people on the new Persian year and National Day of Farmers. The governor hoped the new year would bring peace and security to the country.

Over the past 12 months, 1,500 projects costing $80 million had been completed in the province, Deputy Governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal said.

According to the deputy governor, $200million revenue was earned by the customs department. Work on a big canalisation project costing nearly 19 million afs would be launched in the province soon, he said.

The Behsud bridge would be reconstructed in addition to two new bridges on the Kabul River this year, Gardiwal promised.

The government would also build a religious seminary at a cost of 92 million afs from the development budget of the province, Gardiwal concluded.
