HERAT CITY (PAN, an official said.

As many as 2,180 criminal cases were registered with the attorney office in the year 1391, showing a 30 percent increase in crimes.

Maria Bashir, the provincial attorney, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “It means people now have greater access to judicial organs.”

In the previous Persian year (1390), a total 1,920 cases were recorded and addressed by the authorities, she proudly said.

Khushdil, a resident of the 12th district, said five houses were robbed last month in the area where he lived. “Over the previous decade, I hadn’t heard of any robbery.

“But now I cannot even go to the mosque in the evening because I feel insecure,” the resident complained, accusing security and judicial organs of failing to take action against criminals.

But Brig. Gen. Rahmatullah Safi, the provincial police chief, insisted they were doing all they could to improve the situation. Those trying to disturb security in the area would be brought to justice, he promised.
