KABUL): Ahead of issuance of the long-awaited computerised identity cards in the capital Kabul, a process of resident registration got under way here on Sunday, the Ministry of Interior announced.

Ministry officials are holding talks with community heads and elders from 11th and 16th police districts on how to participate in the process that involves filling of registration forms.

Maqsoom Farhad, an official at the ministry, told Pajhwok Afghan News card issuance would begin after the ongoing talks concluded. Five registration centres have been set up so far in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th police districts.

Each registration centre has a 10-member team that will issue about 250 ID cards a day, according to the official, who said the number would rise to in near future.

According to Farhad, registration forms would be delivered at residents’ doorstep and those who wanted to receive electronic ID card had to fill out the 12-stage forms in three days.

“At the initial stage, one individual and a family form will be handed to each household to fill and have their identity verified by elders and community heads. This will pave the way for them to receive computerised cards from registration centres,” he explained.
