KABUL): Six zones created seven years ago for handling and coordinating affairs among police headquarters were abolished on Wednesday.

The Cabinet took the decision in response a request from the Ministry of Interior, ministry spokesman Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said: “A complete and careful assessment of police personnel in 2012 showed the continuation of the zones was useless and ineffective.”

Subsequently, the ministry urged the Council of Ministers to dissolve the zones in the interest of improved police performance in maintaining peace and stability across the country, he added.

The decision on abolishing the police zones in Kabul, Jalalabad, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kandahar, Gardez and Herat would be fully enforced during the current year, he said, without giving the exact date.

Currently, there are 157,000 policemen working under the interior ministry in the 34 provinces of the country.
